The Bozeman Ski Porn Stoke-fest

October 26th, 2008

The audience makes its "claim" at Matchstick's Claim premier

Not that Bozeman isn’t a bit of a ridiculous stoke-fest all year, but it’s craziest in the fall for sure. It’s not just the big ski movie premiers, either. As soon as it snows everyone actually gets out there, shreds the rocks, and posts up about it on the TGR forums. Fueled by things like the Cold Smoke Awards there’s a constant stream of local films, and footage on youTube too. On the MSU campus the other day there was even a “rail jam”. Right on the campus mall. They piled up hay bales and covered them with snow. It’s a bit of a junk-show here while everyone waits for ski season. And I love it. :)

I got into town a little late this year and missed many of the big “ski porn” movie premiers. Which is fine as I’ll go broke dropping $10 a pop on them anyway… but I was pretty heartbroken that I missed Travis Rice’s “That’s It, That’s All” a truly pornographic High Definition film full of raw mountain and snowboarding footage. And I do mean Hi-Def - I think they used the same cameras as Planet Earth. Check out the trailer below. Alas I missed it! But I did catch the Matchstick premier of Claim. It was every bit as rad as I have come to expect, year after year, and had a particularly amazing scene where the speedflier Antoine Montante set off a huge avalanche in the Alps… wow.

In addition to the big budget ski movies this year there was a nice batch of more “grassroots” films, such as the new Powderwhore movie The Pact (shown at the Pray for Snow party) and a chill movie featuring just human-powered skiing called Hand Cut. At a ski movie party sponsored by Chalet Sports I caught an AWESOME local ski movie called Black Napkin too, which featured big hucks and even bigger straight-lines right here at home in the Bridgers! (Be sure to catch that movie at the Cold Smoke Awards this year). There was also at least one awesome non-film event I caught in Bozeman, a slideshow about two sweet backcountry trips that the Hans Saari Fund assisted with this past year, including an awesome traverse of the Tordrillo Range in Alaska. The stoke never ceases! Now bring on the snow!!
