Before we left the States my travel partner Drew bought a new climbing rope. We both climb and were excited to have belay partners for the trip but my rope got ruined when it was used for house construction and Drew was ropeless, so we CLIMBINGTREESbought a nice new rope for the trip and were itching to use it. This meant that on the drive up towards Alaska… we pretty much had to stop in at Banff National Park. Banff was still pretty snowy but we camped up in a provincial park on the snow anyway and enjoyed a great day of climbing outside of Canmore. The climbing area was called Grassi Lake and had a lot of bolted sport climbs, although most of them were quite difficult (5.10+). We found some fun routes to climb however and enjoyed a great day in the Canadian sun. The climbing there was Limestone I think, and there were many different features ranging from big roof cracks to the easy “Golf Course”, a wall with huge pockets. The big finale was when Drew led an overhung 5.10c. He kind of had to though, since there was a party of three older women who were killing some other 5.10+ climbs right next to us. :)
