Road Trip 08 Planning: Now “Alaska Trip 08″

May 8th, 2008

So, I think I’m going to call this first part of my summer travels “Alaska Trip 08″ now, because my plans have changed to the point where it is now quite distinct from the rest of my travel plans. I am now going to Alaska with Drew, a friend of mine. We were basically planning to go to the same place to do the same things at the same time, so we’re combining forces to save money. Originally I was planning on leaving later, or he was planning on staying all summer, or only going for a couple of weeks… there were differences that set our individual trips apart. As time went by, however, with developments like a week long river trip we were both going on, our trips became the same so why not split the gas money?

This is actually a really cool development. As much as I was anticipating going crazy alone in the Alaskan wilderness Drew is great company and now I have a buddy to pull me out of crevasses or at least tell my parents I put up a fight before the bear ate me (a thoughtful white lie, no doubt). This change in plans just means that instead of one long road trip I’m going on two separate shorter trips, with a stop at home in between (we return from Alaska back to Bozeman again so he can look for work). I’m leaving markedly earlier than planned now though. Like, two weeks earlier. So I have some intense packing and loose-end errands ahead of me. On the bright side I’m done with all of college except the finishing touches on one final project. Yay! I’ve been made to feel like you’ve really done something when you graduate, so it’s exciting. I’m not sure just what it is you’ve done when you finish school… but it’s something. At any rate I need to get back to finishing up this project, but I’ll finish with our tentative route:

  • Ski/Climb up through Canada
  • Skagway
  • Glacier Bay National Park/Juneau/Gustavus
  • Ferry to Haines and continue North
  • Anchorage
  • Kenai/Seward
  • Valdez!
  • Denali Highway
  • Denali National Park!
  • Fairbanks
  • River Trip Finale
  • Long drive home

We’ll see how it all comes together. It’s a lot of see in a month, so we may cut something out or extend our trip, but that’s a preview of the adventures to come. Stay tuned! (God that’s corny, I’ll try not to say that again)
